ABOUT STAUNTON VIRGINIA

Staunton is a wonderful historical city located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. With a population of approximately 35,000 people one can have the better of two worlds by enjoying a combination of country living along with city convenience. Staunton is thriving with its’ rich history and recently completed downtown renovations including beautiful brick sidewalks, granite curbing, replicas of the historically accurate gas lighting complete with a high tech infrastructure to guide us easily into the future.

Staunton is well positioned for those wanting a small town atmosphere within and easy drive to larger, metropolitan areas. Those living in Staunton have an easy commute to Washington D.C, Richmond, costal areas such as Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport, I-81 and I-64 allow for short travel times to many major areas.

One would be hard pressed to find a comparable city which has as many cultural opportunities as Staunton offers. The downtown area offers a minimum of 50+ gift shops, quaint restaurants, antique shops, museums. The Black Friars Playhouse, in the heart of Staunton, is the only existing replica of the Shakespeare’s Black Friars Theatre. The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library is also located in the downtown area.

The downtown restaurants are as unique as the variety of tastes common in today’s lifestyles. From authentic Mexican and fine Italian cuisine to fun and exciting martini bars and casual outside dining experiences, there is something for everyone in the downtown area.

The Arts are alive and well in the downtown area with the newly renovated Smith Center. This center is home to the Historic Staunton Foundation, the Staunton Augusta Art Center, plus classrooms, studios and galleries, as well as the Augusta County Historical Society. Take art classes at the Beverley Street Studio. Learn how to blow glass or explore patchwork quilting, jewelry making and/or knitting classes in your spare time. Downtown, there is something of interest for everyone in your family!

The Staunton area is fortunate to have so many university and colleges within a short drive for those who wish to begin or continue their higher learning. Staunton is home to Mary Baldwin College. James Madison University and Bridgewater College are within 30 miles of Staunton. The beautiful University of Virginia is located in Charlottesville and within 35 miles of Staunton. Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave offer both non-credit courses and college prep classes.

For the sports-minded, there are three golf courses in the immediate area. Featuring courses for all levels, there is one for everyone. There are caverns to explore, lakes to ski, boat and swim and an abundance of trails to accomplish. The winter months offer skiing at one of four great resorts within ninety minutes of Staunton.
